The Adams Annual Rice Lake Tour

by Eileen Adams

What a wonderful time we had on our 10th Annual Rice Lake Tour on August 3rd 2003! Even though the morning was quite foggy and thunder storms were threatening foul for the day, it didn't dampen the spirits of the hardiest of us. We left our home in Roseneath at 10:00 a.m. with 25 antique and classic cars in our parade. This is not a club, just a bunch of friends getting together for a day of fun, with all types of vehicles, such as the Model A, Model T, Erskine, Chev, Ford, hot-rods, trucks, and a 1950s jeep. On this tour the ages of the cars ranged from 1912-1985. The proud owners are very happy to show their vehicles and tell you about them.

Before leaving everyone was given a sheet of the tour, telling them where to turn etc. We toured down County Road 18, through Harwood and Gores Landing taking in the beautiful view of Rice Lake and waving to all those who like to watch a parade. We turned on to County Road 9 at the tennis court and continued on this road until we came to Cavan Road, just past Oak Hills Road. We drove through Bewdley, which is really a busy spot, and on to 28 Highway, where we had a pit stop and picked up 5 more cars. We traveled Highway 28 to Bailieborough, where we turned on to Lake View Road. At the 4-way stop, we turned left on to the Bensfort Bridge, and followed that road to Keene. We then went to Lang's Pioneer Village where we had our picnic lunch, chatted with the many participants and had a tour into the past. We gathered 7 more cars at the Village making a grand total of 37 cars in our tour. Often at Lang's Village, there is something going on there of interest, and this year, it was a re-enactment of the war of 1812. They had people in period costume demonstrating the different types of guns or muskets used at that time (and every time one of them banged - I jumped!) Some of our participants bring musical instruments, and we are favoured with live tunes while at our rest stop.

After lunch, we are on the road again, back to the 4-way stop in Keene, and turned on to County Road 2 through Villiers and on to Hastings. This is such a lovely area and we really get to see it touring at our slower speeds. From there we turn on to County Road 25 and follow it to Warkworth, where we travel County Road 29. This is a long, but scenic route and quite a nice drive. We turn on to Macklin Road to the 45 highway and back to Roseneath. We stop at the antique carousel for a ride or two on our choice of any of the 40 horses or 2 boats and take plenty of pictures. This is one of the highlights of our day!

The next stop was the Kenleen Museum and home for Ken & I in Roseneath, where we savored a delicious 'Hayden Taylor and Family' beef and pork barbecue, and again listened to the music provided by our talented guests. The general public are always invited to take part in the barbecue, and this year 147 people enjoyed the meal and we all enjoyed the day.

Because it was our 10th tour, we presented a plaque to all those who brought a vehicle. We were given an unexpected, surprise gift of a plaque by our friends Fred and Anne Duff thanking us for hosting the tours as long as we have done it.

The Adams Annual Rice Lake Tour is always the 1st Sunday in August and we welcome anyone who wishes to come in any type of car, truck or jeep. Maybe we'll see you next year! For more information on the tour or the Kenleen Museum feel free to call Ken or Eileen at 905-352-2098. Safe motoring.
