Complacency or Contempt ?

By William McCullough

Which is it when it comes to the public and our elected officials?
Now is a good time to look at this dilemma. Who, in my opinion, is the most arrogant and un-democratic Prime Minister in our country’s history? No, it’s not Brian Mulroney or Pierre Elliot Trudeau but our current leader the little man from Shawinigan: Jean Chretien! A man who lied to the Canadian people and we still elected him 3 times. A-ma-zing that! But I regress that’s for latter. We had our one and only chance to send a strong message to all those arrogant politicians but we failed in our duty as citizens.

Remember the Red Book? The plan to save our great nation put forth by the Liberals and used to great effect by the P.M to win in a landslide? The withdrawal of the hated G.S.T was one of these articles’ cornerstones. But after the election – Well, 29 million of us must have bad hearing because, according to the P.M, he never said it would be ‘scrapped’ but ‘reviewed’. Now we all know - When a politician says they’ll review something it usually costs us millions and nothing gets done. But this time we had a chance when one of the top Liberals said she’d resign over the misunderstanding. Of course this was our chance. We all thought a massive defeat in a re-election would send the message “KEEP YOUR PROMISES”. As we all now know she won large and since that day our leader has basically stepped on the rights of all Canadians. Is it complacency or contempt on our part? As for me, it’s been over a decade and it still saddens me that a nation with a history as rich as ours could silently watch this unfold and not get angry and demand accountability on the part of our elected officials.
