No Tackle...No Problem

By RLT Staff

This is truly a great country (despite government misgivings…sigh) in more ways then I can count. Allow me to bring to the fore-front one of those great things. In 1998 a new program was launched by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H) that helped bridge the gap for youngsters and first-time anglers to experience fishing. This program, now 6 years running was incepted as Tackle Share© and has spread province wide with some very prominent companies offering support.

This program – one of a kind in Canada - places rod, reel and tackle into the hands of those without the necessary gear to fish Ontario’s waters. Children not having the fishing tackle are the primarily target for the program but any novice angler can take part in the loaner program.

The program, similar to a library where you can borrow books, provides the loaning of tackle for up to 3 days for free! How about that, now there is no excuse for parents.

With over 100 participating sites, you are likely to find one close by wherever you may be in this great province. Quite a few community organizations have joined in to propagate and promote the program from Big Brothers/Big Sisters, local libraries, retailers and conservation areas throughout the province along with I think most if not all Provincial Parks. The list is growing each year.

This year the program acquired Canadian Tire Corporation as a lead sponsor…kudos.

In addition to the loaner program they also have what seems to be a great traveling show, a 3 hour educational program teaching kids (good for most adults to attend as well, I’m sure) conservation, fish identification, natural history and fishing techniques. They are open for bookings for various community organizations, camps, resorts and parks. And if that isn’t enough the show also takes the time to allow kids to ‘wet a line’ and try tackle and techniques. This is a great way to introduce kids to fishing. Last year they logged 25,000 km's while visiting more than 50 locations hooking more than just fish you can be sure.

For the best of fishing adventures…No tackle, no problem …just add a kid or two.

They have a great website with lots of information, schedules, contact and booking form at http://www.tackleshare.com .
