Welcome to the “The Fishin' Hole” on Rice Lake Today.

By Terry Curtis

My name is Terry Curtis and I’m a fishing guide, tournament angler and fishing columnist who writes a weekly “Terry’s Tips” fishing article for Osprey News Group as well as other fishing magazines when time permits. Beautiful Rice Lake is often called a “fish factory” by the people at the Ministry of Natural Resources, and with good reason – it still produces the most fish per acre of any lake in Ontario.

That’s a pretty prestigious claim to fame, considering all the bountiful waters in Ontario. Known for it’s bass, walleye, muskie and panfishing all over America, Rice Lake is also fast becoming known for its carp fishing as well.

Considered by many as a “garbage” or “nuisance” fish carp are highly prized by our European visitors and resorts such as Golden Beach Resort offer special fishing areas for carp anglers right from shore.

Bass Anglers love Rice Lake not only for the numbers of both large and smallmouth, but the size as well. That’s the main reason so many bass tournaments are held here each year, with these tournaments drawing some of the top anglers in Canada and the United States to the waters of “Rice”.

Walleye chasers pursue the many weed lines and humps of Rice Lake in search of the tastiest fish anywhere and Rice Lake continues to cough up lots!

Panfish such as crappie, perch and bluegill are found throughout the lake and they’re easy to catch, even for novice anglers. At present there is no daily catch limit for them, but watch for this to change in the near future. Some changes are in the works.

Muskie anyone? Rice Lake still holds some huge fish and although most catches are incidental some avid muskie anglers still catch some beauties! Check out Muskie Bay or the back of Long Island in October or November and hang on, some big muskie still live there!

Whew! That’s a lot of fishing eh? And if you need a place to lay your tired head after a day of plying Rice Lake’s waters, there are plenty of resorts, campgrounds and campsites where you can rest up.

From the simplest of tent sites to resorts with spas, restaurants etc. Rice Lake has it all!
Great fishing, great amenities, the place to be is Rice Lake, Ontario.

Watch for regular updates at “The Fishing Hole” I’ll be providing fishing tips and pictures regularly. Feel free to contact me with fishing questions or guiding rates at:
